Frequently Asked Questions
Contingency – Middle East Inbound
Recent developments in the Middle East have led to disruptions across key transport routes, including airspace restrictions in parts of the GCC and impacts to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, both ocean and air freight operations in the region are experiencing schedule changes, delays and potential cost implications.
1. What is the current situation and why does it affect my shipments?
Recent developments in the region have led to temporary disruptions across some key transport routes. Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, an important gateway for vessels entering and leaving the Gulf, has been affected, resulting in shipping delays and some route adjustments by global carriers.
At the same time, precautionary airspace restrictions across parts of the Middle East have led to flight cancellations and rerouting, which is impacting air freight schedules.
As a result, both ocean and air logistics across the region are experiencing delays and operational adjustments. Our teams remain in close coordination with carriers and authorities to monitor developments and minimise the impact on customer shipments.
2. Will my sea freight (container) shipments be delayed or rerouted? How much longer will it take?
Some delays and routing adjustments are expected. Several ocean carriers have paused new bookings to certain Middle East ports or diverted vessels via alternative routes or regional transhipment hubs.
As a result, transit times may increase depending on the route and carrier schedules. In some cases, containers may be discharged at the nearest safe port outside the Gulf for onward arrangements. We will proactively communicate any changes to your shipment schedules or costs.
3. What about air freight shipments? Are they affected as well?
Air freight operations have been affected by precautionary airspace restrictions across parts of the Middle East, leading some airlines to cancel flights or operate longer alternative routes.
In addition, some global cargo carriers have temporarily suspended services to and through the Gulf region, reducing available air freight capacity. We are working closely with airline partners to identify alternative routings and secure space on available flights.
Customers are advised to prioritise urgent shipments and anticipate potential schedule changes for air cargo.
4. Are there additional fees or surcharges due to these disruptions?
Some ocean carriers have introduced temporary surcharges to reflect increased operating costs, including longer routes, fuel usage and insurance implications. In certain cases, additional charges related to cargo discharge, handling or storage at alternative ports may also apply in line with carrier terms and conditions.
For air freight, capacity constraints may lead to higher spot rates or adjustments to contracted rates. Any applicable surcharges or cost changes will be communicated in advance, and we will continue to work with our carrier partners to secure the most favourable rates and routings for our customers.
5. Can my vehicle or Ro-Ro shipments still be delivered to Gulf countries?
Vehicle and RORO shipments can continue to move through alternative routing solutions. In some cases, cargo may be discharged at other regional ports and transported onward by land to the Final destination. For example, shipments bound for Abu Dhabi, Dubai (UAE) or Dammam (Saudi Arabia) may be routed via ports such as Sohar (Oman) or Khorfakkan (UAE) or Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) before continuing overland.
These contingency routes allow continued movement of vehicles and equipment across the region, although transit times may be longer than usual. Updates will be provided as routing arrangements are confirmed.
6. How is Al-Futtaim Logistics managing the situation, and what should customers do now?
We have activated our crisis management processes and are closely monitoring developments while coordinating with shipping lines, airlines and relevant authorities. We are reviewing affected shipments and identifying appropriate contingency options.
Customers with critical or time sensitive shipments are encouraged to contact their Al-Futtaim Logistics account manager to review priorities and available options. As the situation remains dynamic, customers should anticipate potential delays and allow additional lead time within supply chain planning.
Customers are advised to:
- Confirm cargo status and any diversion port with the carrier.
- Prepare documentation required for potential port switches.
- Plan for possible deviation surcharges or additional handling costs.
- Coordinate closely with the Al-Futtaim Logistics Operations and Key Accounts teams and refer to the designated points of contact for destination ports.
